MAYOR GAMAO JUMPSTARTS 2ND SANITARY LANDFILL IN DAVAO DEL NORTE, STOPS RELOCATION SITE RUMORS
Panabo City – Mayor James Gamao leads the groundbreaking and capsule-laying ceremony of the 10.3 – hectare Sanitary Landfill (SLF) on May 15, 2019, Wednesday at Purok 5, Brgy. Waterfall Panabo City.
“This very important project will greatly help our city as it is mandated through Republic Act 9003,” said Mayor Gamao. He also emphasized that the said area will be used as an SLF and not for relocation site purposes, contrary to rumors spreading within the city.
R.A. 9003, otherwise known as the “Solid Waste Management Act of 2000”, seeks to implement a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management program in the country. One of the Gamao Administration’s thrust is to establish, address and implement proper waste disposal within the city.
The Category III SLF project will consist of landfill cells, water treatment facility, weighbridge, administration building, guard house and road developments. Trees were also planted within the SLF property line, 20 meters from the inner perimeter. The phase I construction will start this month and the SLF will be operational on or before December 2019.
“This will be the second SLF to be implemented in the province of Davao del Norte since Samal City has established its own in 2016,” said Asst. City ENRO Engr. Oliver Oriol.
According to City ENRO Engr. Senajon, the city with its 40 baragays generates 60 tons of residual wastes per day. These wastes include plastics and other non-biodegradable wastes. As of the moment, these wastes go to the city’s controlled dumpsite in Brgy. New Malitbog. The city will initiate the closure of the controlled dumpsite when the SLF becomes operational.
The city is also implementing City Ordinance 47-13, or “AN ORDINANCE REGULATING THE USE OF PLASTIC BAGS AND PROMOTING THE USE OF RECYCLABLE BAGS IN THE CITY OF PANABO AND PROVIDNG PENALTIES FOT VIOLATIONS THEREOF”. This is to reduce the volume of plastic waste disposed in the facility.
